He studied at Rodez and Clermont-Ferrand then just take courses at the Sorbonne (Paris) and the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes where he was later lecturer.
He was appointed curator at the museum of Versailles in 1892, then director of the museum Jacquemart-Andre in 1920. Pierre de Nolhac has left many works for the most devoted to history in particular humanism during the Renaissance.
Pierre de Nolhac has devoted several books to Queen Marie-Antoinette and the Palace of Versailles. His work as a poet was widely recognized in his time.
He was elected member of the French Academy in 1922. A postage stamp was issued on February 15, 1960 at the effigy of Pierre de Nolhac.
